I am Sofie
I started with ceramics in 2016 and quickly became fascinated by glazes. As a scientist, I wanted to understand why glazes do what they do. I tested, failed, learned, and took workshops with international instructors.
In 2019, I started teaching glazing classes myself and noticed how high the barrier was for many ceramists: glaze theory is complex, and the available books are often in English or focus exclusively on recipes.
In 2024, I decided to write down all my knowledge clearly and in a structured manner.

Translations
After two successful self-published editions, it was time for the next step. Lannoo Publishers believed in the book and took on both the Dutch reissue and the translations.
The English (Glazes Uncovered) and French (L’émail en toute transparence) versions are available for purchase via the webshop, along with the Dutch edition.

Corrections
The first printing (November 2024) sold out within a month. In 2025, a second printing was released with some design corrections.

At the top of page 47, red iron oxide is listed twice above the columns with steel photos. This should of course be titanium oxide. The percentages are correct.

In the figure, the indicated volumes for steel 2 and steel 3 are incorrect. For steel 2, there should be a 0 in the dark green section where there is a 4 in the book. For steel 3, there should be a 4 in the dark green section where there is a 0 in the book.

The text in the upper right corner next to the figure should read "0% chromium oxide," but the book lists it as "3% chromium oxide.".
Steel with cobalt oxide

The samples labeled A (cobalt oxide) should, of course, be 0.15% and not 0.3% as listed. The explanation and example on page 121 are correct, however.

There is a typo in the amount of chalk: it should be 52.7 instead of 51.7 for the 1 kg column. The 10kg column is also incorrect as a result. The correct value for 10 kg is 527 instead of 517.
KristalG Recipe

There is a typo in the amount of zinc oxide: it should be 16.76 instead of 17.76 for the 100 g column. The 1 kg and 10 kg amounts are also incorrect due to this. The values should be 167.6 and 1676 respectively. In the same recipe, the digit 0 is missing in the 10 kg column for nepheline syenite. The correct number is 3510 instead of 351.
